Visit notes / care by phone or online

# What does care over a screen involve?

Telehealth means getting care by phone, by video call or through an online form. Ask whether the person reviewing your health has enough information to decide about treatment.

Keep these questions close

Say where you will be.

Ask how your health is reviewed.

Ask how to get help after the visit.

Pause. Ask. Check the answer.

## Find out how the visit works.

### Ask who reviews your history.

Ask whether you will speak live, send information for later review, or use both. Find out how the reviewer can follow up with you for more information.

### Expect a chance for questions.

As of September 26, 2026, the Federation of State Medical Boards’ guidance rejects a prescription based just on a patient choosing medicine from a list.

The same guidance requires a way for patients to ask their care provider further questions.

This group brings state medical boards together. It describes how care ought to work; each state sets its own rules.

### Ask about tests or a visit in person.

Medical-board guidance says the person reviewing your health must arrange needed tests or send you for them when more information is needed.

It calls for an in-person referral when the health issue needs an examination or procedure that cannot be done remotely.

## Your location matters.

As of September 26, 2026, HHS guidance says the person providing care must be licensed or otherwise allowed to work where the patient is during the visit.

HHS means the US Department of Health and Human Services. Tell the service your location at visit time, including any change due to travel.

State rules for online prescribing differ, including rules for phone calls and online forms.

Ask the service what applies in that state. A claim that it works everywhere needs a clear explanation.

## A form can be part of care.

Medical-board guidance allows a first visit online, either live or with answers reviewed later, if it meets the same care requirements as an in-person visit.

The guidance rejects treatment based only on a form with set answers and no way to ask you more questions.

The person reviewing your answers must be able to ask for more detail about your health.

Ask: “Who reviews my health history? Can we both ask more questions? How will you arrange a test or an in-person examination if needed?”

The guidance does not replace your state’s rules. Ask what happens if your answers need a closer look.

Before leaving the visit
